Moloka`i Nature Preserve
There are a lot of stories that stem from Moloka`i, one of the larger Hawai`ian Islands. Those centred around the Mokio Preserve have a heartwarming turn.
Work is ongoing to build a predator fence around Mokio Nature Preserve to protect the native birds that locals are attracting back to the island with automated bird calls and safe grounds they can build their nests in. The approximately 7ft tall fence would keep out the invasive species of mongooses, cats, and the wildly unstably growing white-deer population. And within the area, the invasive species of thorn-covered bush trees will be removed, and native species that had all been removed will be restored.
The new fence is one of several that are generally kept closed to the general public. The first gate along the highway is not marked and you need to request a key to unlock. It is open for basically anyone to ask, but you need to know, and it's not advertised. This keeps the land and animals protected from destructive tourists and a great educational area for local kids.
There should be more places where people care like this and work to improve the mistakes of the past. Because if we allow more and more destruction to take place in our natural world the decrepit fence in the middle of an abanded cow pasture will be the perfect symbol of the waste bought on by the most selfish people.
